The PDP lawmakers in a statement on Tuesday, July 21, warned they will commence impeachment proceedings against Buhari if the insecurity challenges in Nigeria do not improve and if what they termed as the calculated blackmail against the National Assembly is not checked, Premium Times reported.

The PDP caucus in the House gave the president a four-week ultimatum to provide security to Nigerians and commence proper cleaning of they described as the embarrassing and notorious corruption cases in the country or face impeachment.

“We shall revert to the relevant sections of the constitution and commence impeachment proceedings in the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians, Kingsley Chinda, the leader of the caucus said.

According to the opposition lawmakers, the disrespect for the constitution by appointees of the executive arm was a ground to instigate the impeachment process.

They also complained that everywhere is unsafe in the country because of the constant attacks from terrorists, kidnappers and bandits.

Meanwhile, following the rising insecurity in Nigeria, the Senate on Tuesday, July 21, asked the country’s service chiefs to step aside without any further delay.

Bloomgist News gathered that the resolution followed a motion by Senator Ali Ndume (APC, Borno), who expressed worry over the reported voluntary retirement of over 200 army officers.

The red chamber also asked its joint committee on security to find out why the officers were deserting from the service.

In reaction to Ndume’s motion, senators called for the dismissal of the service chiefs during plenary on Tuesday, July 21.

The Senate also resolved that the top hierarchy of the military should brief its relevant committees on the factors militating against the operations of the military to find a way forward. In another report, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, on Monday, July 20, declared that terrorism and banditry would end in Nigeria when the citizens of the country decide.

Nigerian Tribune reports that Buratai made this known when he visited the Presidential Villa to brief President Muhammadu Buhari on the progress of the war against insecurity in the country.

He made the statement when speaking to newsmen after the meeting with the president, he said in order to put the menace behind, all Nigerians must join hands in the fight, adding that the criminals involved are mostly citizens of the country.
