Nigerian grandpa gagged, slapped on Emirates flight

A 71 year-old Nigerian grandpa, David Ukesone has recounted a raw deal that he had from the crew of Emirates airline, flying from Dubai to Chicago.

Nigerian grandpa gagged, slapped on Emirates flight

He was punched on the face, his mouth taped and bound like a prisoner for eight hours on his trip to reunite with his family.

His offence was that he got into a dispute with the flight attendants over his seat number. And then,as Mail Online reported, matters escalated.

Ukesone said he hadn’t been on a plane in over 35 years.

‘He apparently sits in the wrong seat and was told to change seats by a flight attendant,’ attorney Howard Schaffner told ABC News. ‘He didn’t think he was in the wrong seat and there was an argument and, at some point, he was hit.

Emirates Airlines, in a statement released Monday, confirmed the incident.

‘Emirates can confirm that a passenger on flight EK235 from Dubai to Chicago on 23 January had to be restrained by cabin crew due to unruly behavior during the flight. The passenger was handed over to the authorities on arrival in Chicago. The safety of our passengers and crew is of the utmost importance and will not be compromised. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the other passengers on the flight for their understanding, in particular the individuals who had assisted our crew during the flight.’

However, his lawyer said, he had no issue traveling from Nigeria to Dubai until he began the second leg of his trip.

Ukesone boarded the flight after his layover in Dubai with the boarding pass assigning him to seat 35D. He was joining his wife who immigrated four months earlier.

His adult son and daughter had also immigrated to the US.

The incident unfolded after Ukesone went to the bathroom and got in the wrong seat after he returned.

His attorney says he sat ‘very close’ to 35D.

Ukseone understands English, but not perfectly. When the argument ensued between himself and the flight crew, his lawyer says, he was very confused.

‘He was asked to move and he wants to take his bag in the overhead compartment with him,’ the attorney said.

‘They told him he was in the wrong seat and they laid hands on him to move him and that’s when everything escalated,’ Schaffner said.

The argument continued to escalate and the flight crew allegedly struck him ‘at least once’ and left a ‘large welt on his face,’ according to his lawyer.

VIDEO: Stephanie Otobo returns, confesses of blackmailing Apostle Johnson Suleman

Not too many scandals remain fresh in our memory like the one against Apostle Johnson Suleman by singer, Stephanie Otobo. It was a battle of words, accusations, prayer and a song. Sigh! We won’t forget that music video in a while.

Stephanie Otobo returns, confesses of blackmailing Apostle Johnson Suleman

We spent a whole lot of time last year going back and forth over the alleged scandal of Apostle Johnson Suleman. The internet broke last year, when the self acclaimed lover of Apostle Suleman accused him of impregnating and refusing to marry her. It looked like after a while, we all forgot but like they say, the internet never truly forgets.

News about Stephanie Otobo suddenly resurfaced on the internet today after a video was released by Omega Fire Ministries of her apology and public confession. We don’t know the trigger behind these recent trail on confessions against evil acts formerly perpetrated against pastors.

Should we just agree its the power of prayer?

The Canadian-based Nigerian lady had gone to Omega Fire Ministry headquarters, Auchi, Edo, to apologise to Apostle Johnson Suleman and his family saying in tears that she was paid by politicians to lie against the man of God.

In her words, “The only offense he committed was to have intervened in the numerous heinous crimes against the Church of Christ around the Nation and became a Voice for the Gospel.

“What followed was a well – doctored drama to attack the reputation of this Golden Voice and seemingly reduce the volume of his voice even as more evils were planned against the Church.

“After all the evil efforts, the secret agenda, the heavily funded set up and the unrelenting pursuits to snare an innocent man, they were futile. The master planner has finally vindicated his church and his servant. This is not only a victory for God’s Servant; it is a victory for the Body of Christ & The Church in Nigeria.”

Apostle Suleman afterwards, prayed for her, claiming to have forgiven her.

But, we are confused and like any other person, we have a couple of questions. But, we’ll wait for later.

Uproar over recipients of state award in Kenya

The procedure for granting the Head of State Commendation (HSC) award has been questioned.

This is after Martin Kamotho alias ‘Githeri Man’, journalist Jacque Maribe and bloggers Dennis Itumbi, Robert Alai, Pauline Njoroge and others were feted during Tuesday’s Jamhuri Day celebrations.

The HSC is one of the presidential awards usually given to outstanding Kenyans who selflessly render their services to the country.

Other recognition awards include the Order of the Grand Warrior, Distinguished Conduct Order, Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star of Kenya and the Uhodari Medal.

The list in the HSC category, which had 59 people, sparked uproar among Kenyans, with some taking to social media to criticise it while others said the award had lost meaning.

‘Githeri Man’ became famous after the August 8 election when a photograph of him eating githeri as he queued to vote, surfaced online.

“Head of State Commendation has now become an honour for partisan political party bloggers and their girlfriends.

Whoever is selecting them could do with a wider pool. I mean, not only political activists and bloggers are serving the interests of this great nation. I rest my case,” wrote George Akuno.

Charles Wanyoro wrote: “Githeri man gets a Head of State Commendation. Apart from showing up to vote just like millions others, what else did he do? Anyway, congratulations to him.”

Collins Ogutu was also not pleased and wrote: “Do anything silly and you receive a Head of State Commendation in Kenya.”

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery’s widow, Hellen, boxer Fatuma Zarika, singer Ben Githae journalist Victor Muyakane – who was photographed saving a disabled beggar outside the Supreme Court a few months ago — were also feted.

World Boxing Council Super Bantamweight Champion Fatuma Zarika, also among the recipients, a week ago punched out Zambian Catherine Phiri to retain her title. Others on the list are Jeremiah Chalwa, Moraa Mellissa, Joseph Njiraini, Mehmood Shahid, Dr Joseph Odhiambo, Esther Koskei, Sister Amollo Anastacia, evangelist Teresiah Wairimu and Billy Arocho.

“There are several athletes, sportsmen and others who have branded Kenya in a very positive way, yet they have not been recognised,” Joyce Obino wrote on Facebook.

Recipients of these awards are selected by the National Honours and Awards Committee which works in the Office of the President.

They are guided by Section 4 of the National Honours Act which stipulates that people shall merit the conferment of a national honour if they exhibit exemplary qualities, actions or achievements of heroism, sacrifice, bravery, patriotism or leadership for the defence, benefit or betterment of the country or a county.

“A person who has made an exemplary contribution to the country or a county in the economic, social, scientific, academic, public administration, governance, sports, journalism, business, security or other fields,” the law says in part.

There are several committees which select Kenyans to receive the honours, among them National and County Governments Honours Advisory Committee, Parliamentary Honours Advisory Committee and the Judiciary Honours Advisory Committee.

Despite criticism, some Kenyans were satisfied with the list.

Ozubulu killing: Catholic bishops blame security agencies for arms proliferation

  • Community leaders disagree over cause of attack

  • Police intensifies hunt for suspects

Leaders of Ozubulu Community in Ekwusigo council of Anambra yesterday differed over the cause of attacks on St Philips Catholic Church Amakwa Ozubulu where scores were killed on Sunday morning.

While a section of the community attributed the killings to communal crises in the town, others said two rival groups who were strategising to produce the leadership of Ozubulu Development Union (ODU), carried the leadership tussle to the Church.

The leaders of the rival groups, who are based in South Africa, had been doing everything possible to influence members of the community in an effort to produce the President General of the union.

It was gathered that the traditional ruler of the town, Igwe Fidelis Oruche, had in the past intervened by inviting the groups to Ozubulu but no meaningful resolution had been reached.

Oruche, however, said contrary to insinuations in certain quarters, the crisis that led to the killings had nothing to do with drug deals. In a report released yesterday, the ODU Caretaker Committee condemned the attack, saying it was a taboo, shocking and devastating to the entire community and beyond.

The statement titled: “Senseless and Brutal Murder of Worshippers at St. Philips Catholic Church, Amakwa–Ozoubulu, signed by President General of Amakwa, ODU, Iykebest Malizu, the community said they were mourning their loved ones who were killed in the early morning Mass.

Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Chukwuka Ernest, regretted the incident and wondered why such a dastardly act should happen in the house of God.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nkiru Nwude, however said that some arrests have been made and that the suspects have offered useful information to their investigations.

Meanwhile, the Catholic Bishops of Ibadan Province have blamed the Ozubulu killings on security agencies’ failure to check arms proliferation in the country. The Bishops spoke in a communiqué signed by the Province President and Secretary, Gabriel Abegunrin and John Oyejola after the Catholic Bishops Conference meeting at Saint Kizito Pastoral Centre in Oke Gada, Ede, Osun State yesterday.

They condemned the gruesome murder of members and commiserated with the people of Anambra over the deaths. Their words: “We sympathise with the Nnewi Diocese, Reverend Hillary Okeke, members of the Diocese, the government and people of Anambra and the families directly affected by the murder on Sunday, August 6, 2017.

“We uphold the sanctity of every human life given by God and not to be taken by anyone and therefore can never denounce enough the evil of such a horrendous and callous killing of innocent worshippers in the Church during Mass.

“The bottom line is that the security situation in Nigeria remains at best, tenuous. We strongly condemn whatever may be the cause of the killings.

Those who are charged with securing human life and property in the nation must do more to protect the citizens. One must ask how the perpetrators of the Ozubulu mayhem came about such deadly weapons.”
